Peyton Burdick
Peyton Burdick Sent to Baltimore
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 12:04 PM
Burdick was acquired by the Orioles from the Marlins on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Burdick was designated for assignment by Miami last week and will now move on to Baltimore. The 26-year-old appeared in just 14 games for the Marlins last season and had a .768 OPS at the Triple-A level. Given the Orioles' depth, Burdick seems like a long shot to make the Opening Day roster.
Felix Bautista
Felix Bautista Shifts to 60-day IL
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 12:02 PM
The Orioles placed Bautista (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
Analysis: Bautista will miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in October followed by a right elbow debridement and an ulnar nerve transposition procedure last week. Baltimore brought in veteran right-hander Craig Kimbrel on a one-year, $13 million contract in December and will install him as the closer this season while Bautista completes his rehab.
Ryan O'Hearn
Ryan O'Hearn Avoids arbitration
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 8:08 AM
O'Hearn signed a one-year, $3.5 million contract with the Orioles on Wednesday, avoiding arbitration, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. The deal includes a $7.5 million club option for 2025.
Analysis: O'Hearn had been in his final year of arbitration eligibility, but the Orioles will now have the option to keep him around for what would have been his first year of free agency, as well. The 30-year-old had a surprise re-emergence with Baltimore in 2023, posting an .801 OPS with 14 homers in 112 games. He will see regular action against right-handers between first base and designated hitter.
Felix Bautista
Felix Bautista Undergoes additional elbow surgery
Fri, Feb 9, 2024, 3:21 PM
Bautista underwent a right elbow debridement and an ulnar nerve transposition Friday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: The first part of the operation cleaned up scar tissue in the elbow, while the second moved the nerve to free it up from compression. While not routine, follow-up procedures are sometimes needed for pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery. Bautista's recovery is going well and the Orioles do not expect his readiness for the 2025 campaign to be affected.
Livan Soto
Livan Soto Claimed by O's
Thu, Feb 8, 2024, 12:52 PM
The Orioles claimed Soto off waivers from the Angels on Thursday, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports.
Analysis: Soto was DFA'd by Los Angeles on Saturday, and he'll now head across the country to fill the opening on Baltimore's 40-man roster. The 23-year-old infielder slashed .237/.342/.358 across 477 plate appearances in the minors last season, and his ability to play multiple infield positions could increase his chances at seeing MLB action this year.
Nick Maton
Nick Maton Sent to Baltimore
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 7:58 PM
The Orioles acquired Maton from the Tigers on Wednesday in exchange for cash.
Analysis: Maton was DFA'd by the Tigers on Monday in order to clear space for Kolton Ingram. Maton showed promise during his first two seasons with the Phillies, but he managed just a .593 OPS last year in 293 plate appearances with Detroit. He will almost certainly head to Triple-A Norfolk to begin 2024.
Jacob Webb
Jacob Webb Wins arbitration case
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 7:08 PM
Webb will earn $1 million in 2024 after winning his arbitration case against the Orioles on Tuesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Webb posted a 3.27 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in 22 innings after he was claimed off waivers by the O's in August, earning himself a $260,000 raise from last season. The 30-year-old righty projects as a middle reliever heading into 2024.
Austin Hays
Austin Hays Will make $6.3 million in 2024
Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 11:40 AM
Hays will make $6.3 million in 2024 after winning his arbitration hearing with the Orioles on Tuesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Analysis: The Orioles had offered $5.85 million, but Hays and his team emerged victorious. Hays, who had been arbitration-eligible for a second time, slashed .275/.325/.444 with 16 home runs across 144 contests for Baltimore in 2023. He's slated to open 2024 in left field for the defending American League East champs.
Corbin Burnes
Corbin Burnes Dealt to Orioles
Thu, Feb 1, 2024, 7:23 PM
Burnes was traded from the Brewers to the Orioles in exchange for DL Hall and Joey Ortiz and the 34th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft on Thursday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Burnes was floated in trade rumors throughout the offseason, though it appeared that perhaps he'd begin the 2024 campaign with the Brewers. Instead, he'll provide a front-line arm to strengthen the Orioles rotation. Even in a down year relative to his lofty standards, Burnes put together a 3.39 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with a 200:66 K:BB across 193.2 innings in 2023 and will now call pitcher-friendly Camden Yards his home park.
Andrew Suarez
Andrew Suarez Nets minors deal from O's
Tue, Jan 30, 2024, 4:35 PM
Suarez signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Suarez returned to the majors last season for the first time since 2020, but he ran into trouble often with a 7.16 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 27.2 innings with the Cardinals. He fared better against Triple-A hitters, but he will need to show significant improvement before getting another shot in the big leagues. For now, Suarez will head to Triple-A Norfolk as organizational depth.
Danny Coulombe
Danny Coulombe Avoids arbitration
Mon, Jan 29, 2024, 9:35 AM
Coulombe signed a one-year contract with the Orioles on Monday that includes a club option for 2025.
Analysis: The deal buys out the left-hander's final year of arbitration eligibility, and potentially, his first year of free agency. Coulombe was excellent for Baltimore in 2023, collecting a 2.81 ERA and 58:12 K:BB over 51.1 innings. He'll be a key setup man in the bullpen again in 2024.
Bruce Zimmermann
Bruce Zimmermann Fully healthy
Sat, Jan 27, 2024, 4:32 PM
Zimmermann (abdomen) said he should be a "full go" for spring training, Steve Melewski of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Zimmermann first suffered the injury in July but was able to pitch through it, per Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com, and he went under the knife to address the issue in October. Zimmermann spent most of last season at Triple-A Norfolk, where he posted a 4.42 ERA and 1.55 WHIP across 99.2 innings, and he'll compete for an Opening Day roster spot during spring training.
DL Hall
DL Hall Still viewed as long-term starter
Fri, Jan 26, 2024, 8:51 AM
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Thursday that the teams still views Hall as a starter long-term, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Analysis: Elias did add, however, that it's possible Hall breaks camp as a reliever, depending on how things shake out in spring training. The plan is to get Hall stretched back out after he spent much of 2023 in a relief role, but it hasn't been determined whether that will happen right away or throughout the course of the upcoming season. All 18 of the southpaw's appearances with Baltimore last season came in relief and he was excellent, posting a 3.26 ERA and 23:5 K:BB over 19.1 innings. Hall, 25, has still yet to reach 100 frames in any of his six professional seasons.
Ronald Guzman
Ronald Guzman Receives minors deal from Orioles
Thu, Jan 25, 2024, 9:24 AM
Guzman signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: A former first baseman, Guzman converted to pitcher last year but wound up missing the season with a forearm injury. He returned to make a couple appearances in the Dominican Winter League, and the Orioles have elected to take a shot on the left-hander.
Daniel Johnson
Daniel Johnson Latches on with Baltimore
Tue, Jan 23, 2024, 2:50 PM
Johnson signed a minor-league contract with the Orioles on Tuesday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Johnson, 28, spent split the 2023 season between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso in the Padres organization, collecting an .817 OPS with 19 home runs and 30 stolen bases. He's capable of handling all three outfield spots and last saw action in the majors in 2021.
Tyler Nevin
Tyler Nevin Dealt to Baltimore
Mon, Jan 22, 2024, 6:45 PM
The Tigers traded Nevin to the Orioles in exchange for cash considerations Monday.
Analysis: Nevin will return to Baltimore after appearing in 58 games for the Orioles during the 2022 campaign. He slashed .200/.306/.316 with two homers, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored over 41 contests a year ago with Detroit and figures to serve as organizational depth heading into the 2024 season.
Cionel Perez
Cionel Perez Avoids arbitration with Orioles
Mon, Jan 22, 2024, 11:40 AM
Perez signed a one-year contract contract with the Orioles on Monday to avoid arbitration.
Analysis: The deal also contains a club option for 2025. The financial particulars aren't clear, but Perez had been seeking $1.4 million for 2024, with the team offering $1.1 million. Perez has collected a 2.43 ERA and 99:48 K:BB over 111 innings in his two seasons in Baltimore.
Felix Bautista
Felix Bautista Not ruling out late-season return
Tue, Jan 16, 2024, 10:41 AM
Bautista (elbow) on Tuesday wouldn't rule out the possibility of returning before the end of the 2024 season, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
Analysis: Bautista underwent Tommy John surgery in October, so the odds of him making it back at any point in 2024 are slim, if not non-existent. The goal remains for the reliever to be ready for the start of the 2025 season. Craig Kimbrel is slated to serve as the Orioles' closer while Bautista rehabs.
Cole Irvin
Cole Irvin Avoids arbitration with Orioles
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 10:34 PM
Irvin signed a one-year deal with the Orioles on Thursday to avoid arbitration.
Analysis: Irvin had an underwhelming 2023 season, during which his role fluctuated between starting and relief. He also spent a considerable amount of time at Triple-A Norfolk, and he'll likely have to earn a roster spot with Baltimore by performing well in spring training heading into the 2024 campaign.
Ryan Mountcastle
Ryan Mountcastle Reaches deal with Orioles
Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 10:30 PM
Mountcastle signed a one-year, $4.1 million deal with the Orioles on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports.
Analysis: Mountcastle has developed into a steady player, posting a slugging percentage above .450 in three of his four big-league seasons. He may lose some playing time in 2024 due to the depth in the Orioles' lineup, but he projects to regularly serve as the team's designated hitter or first baseman.
